Eternal Metamorphosis - Exhibition, Concerts, Talks and Workshops

Contemporary Art and Music at Dissenters’ Gallery, Kensal Green Cemetery

The exhibition Eternal Metamorphosis, at the Dissenters' Gallery brings to London new work by artists Alexis Rago and Janet Waring. The show offers an oasis midst the hustle and bustle of the city. It reveals connections between less obvious aspects of the gallery’s unusual setting and the artists' ideas. These are expressed through a series of large-scale landscape pinhole photographs that extend the medium's possibilities, extremely delicate and intricate small scale sculptures in clay reminiscent of some fantastic fossil find and glowing paintings that draw you into a world of imaginative creatures in various stages of abstraction and metamorphosis.

The Dissenters' Gallery, in the grounds of Kensal Green Cemetery, is in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, and is one of Britain's oldest and most beautiful public burial grounds; a haven of peace and tranquility. This landscaped garden cemetery, also rich in wildlife and mature trees, is the resting place of many notable personalities. The venue together with the Dissenters' Chapel and the cemetery as a whole is under the protection of English Heritage.

A calendar of events will accompany the show: Two evening concerts will take place in the Dissenters’ Chapel, the first, on 7th June, featuring brilliant young violinists Marko Pop Ristov and Florian Rago in a series of expositions of the solo violin. Florian will be joined by pianist Suzanne Szczetnikowicz in the second concert on 14th June. These concerts recall the nineteenth Century violin virtuoso and friend of Beethoven, George Polegreen Bridgetower who is buried in the catacombs of the cemetery. The concerts will take place in the intimate setting of the Dissenters' Chapel which opens out onto the cemetery, making this a magical setting for a summer's evening. June 7 and 14, 19:30. Booking is advisable as seats are limited.

Talks will bring an insight into the creative way of life and the emergence of new meanings in society through what has been called The Politics of the Heart. Writer, lecturer and artist Deborah Ravetz will be giving an interactive talk "The Inner Life, Society and the Artist", 15 June at 16:45. Alexis Rago will be giving the artists' talk, following on from Deborah's ideas about the exchange between the self and artistic expression, in “The Who, What and Why of an Art Work”, 22 June at 16:45.

For those who want to dip their toes in some creative pinhole photography or large scale painting reminiscent of prehistoric cave drawings, the artists will be offering informal workshops. This includes the opportunity for resulting work to be exhibited at the eternalmetamorphosis.org online gallery especially designed for these events. Saturdays and Sundays, 14 - 29 June, 13:00 - 16:00.

The project is being supported by The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea and the Friends of Kensal Green Cemetery.

The exhibition is open Fridays 4 - 8pm, Saturdays and Sundays 11am - 6 pm

7 June to 6 July
